Founded in 2011 by a horticulturist and a stonemason, we've kept the work close so we can stand behind it after the truck leaves.
A crew that stays put
Cedar & Stone started in 2011 when a horticulturist and a stonemason decided the two halves of a good landscape shouldn't be handled by two different companies. One of us could tell you why a retaining wall needs drainage behind it; the other could tell you why a serviceberry will outlast a hydrangea on a north-facing slope in Buncombe County. We built the company so a homeowner only has to explain their yard once.
We're twelve people now: designers, stonemasons, a planting crew and the maintenance team that comes back after everyone else has driven off. Most of us have been here more than five years. That matters on a crew that works with its hands. The mason who sets your flagstone this spring is the same one who'll be setting flagstone for the next client in the fall, and the one who answers the phone if a step settles wrong two winters later.
We keep our work within an hour of Asheville: Buncombe County, Black Mountain, Weaverville, and the neighborhoods in between. That's a choice, not a limit we've hit yet. A crew that drives two hours home doesn't walk your garden in July to see how the little bluestem is holding up, and doesn't get a call in January when a retaining wall needs a second look before frost heave sets in. Staying close means we're still around.
We've built and planted more than 600 projects across the county since we started, in places we drive past on the way to the next job. Some of the first native borders we planted are old enough now that the serviceberry is taller than the crew that put it in the ground.
